The demo video below will show you most of what you need to know when using WebComp Analyst, so be sure and watch that first.
It covers all of the software's current functionality.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Okay, so I have the backlink counts and homepage link counts, but what do those mean, and what do I do with that information?
Good question. Basically, what you're interested in is the lowest number of backlinks that makes it into the ranking you're trying to
aim for. For instance, take this example:
Notice that the site which ranks #2 for 'fiber optic lighting' actually has a lot less links to it than the site which ranks for
#3 (391 versus 1,571). That tells you that, despite those sites with more links, what you really need is something in the
area of 400 links to get to the #2 spot.
Why aren't the sites with more links ranked higher than site #2? It's because the sites don't contain as many links to their
site with the keywords 'fiber optic lighting' as the anchor text. So yes, they have a lot of links, but Google is primarily
counting the links to their site that actually contain the keywords being searched for.
In order to know for sure, you would want to do a deep link analysis on site #2 and see how many links they have with the exact
keywords 'fiber optic lighting'. If they have a lot, then you'll need a lot, too. However, be sure not to get all of your links
aimed at your site with the exact same anchor text -- that throws up a red flag at Google.
A good rule of thumb is the 60/30/10 rule: 60% of your links should contain your primary keywords as the anchor text (in this case,
'fiber optic lighting'), 30% should contain a supportive, but different set of keywords (e.g. 'fiber optic lighting equipment'), and
10% should contain something else (perhaps a mix of a variety of keywords, just to make things look 'natural' to Google).
- Why am I getting errors running WebComp Analyst on Windows Vista?
If you're running the 64-bit version of Windows Vista, you will need to right-click the WebCompAnalyst program icon and select
'Run as Administrator' in order for the application to function properly.
- Does WebComp Analyst run on a Macintosh?
Not natively, no, though we're told you can use VMware to run it. Also, it may work if you install the Mono Framework for Mac OS.
- Can I install my copy of WebComp Analyst on more than one computer?
Yes. Your copy can be installed on any computer you personally own. However, keep in mind that the software will
only operate on one computer at a time. So if you are using it and somebody else tries to use a copy with
the same registration code, one of you will be kicked out of the program.
- Why is it that I see (not found) on some of the deep link urls, but when I check the page the link is there?
This happens in three cases:
First, the problem is usually that your Internet connection can't handle the maximum number of threads that WebComp Analyst
uses by default (100). Slide the 'Max Threads' bar to the left to lower the value. Try 50 at first. If that is still
too many, try 25. The minimum thread count is 10, but that should only be necessary if you're on a very slow connection
(like dial-up).
Second, if the page is actually a framed page of another page, WebComp Analyst will return (not found) even if Yahoo Site Explorer
says the link is there.
Third, if the page uses a script to redirect the user to the url, this will happen. For instance, if the page has a 'goto.php'
script that actually redirects people to 'http://somesite.com', WebComp Analyst doesn't see the link directly to 'somesite.com'
and therefor returns (not found).
- Why is the number of results shown by WebComp Analyst different than the number of results I get when I search Google for my keywords?
The number shown by WebComp Analyst is for the keywords IN QUOTES. So if your keywords are Green Widgets, it checks the number of results
in Google for "Green Widgets" (with the quotes). That's important, because the quoted keywords returns the number of pages that are
actually optimized for the exact phrase Green Widgets, and not just pages that happen to contain the terms Green and Widgets. Your
real competition are the pages that rank for the quoted keywords.
- Is there an affiliate program?
Of course! It pays 50% of the $67 purchase price (minus fees).
